Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum or holy basil) is considered one of the most sacred and powerful medicinal herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Often called the "Queen of Herbs," it supports the body, mind, and spirit in profound ways. Here's how Tulsi can be used as medicine:
1. For Stress & Anxiety
-
Tulsi is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress and restore balance.
-
It reduces cortisol levels and supports a calm, grounded nervous system.
-
How to use: Drink Tulsi tea daily (fresh or dried leaves steeped in hot water for 10–15 minutes) or take as a tincture/capsule.
2. For Respiratory Health
-
Tulsi opens the lungs, thins mucus, and helps fight infections.
-
It’s excellent for colds, coughs, bronchitis, and asthma.
-
How to use: Drink Tulsi tea with honey and ginger, or inhale steam from a Tulsi infusion. Tulsi tincture (30–60 drops up to 3x daily) is also effective.
3. For Immunity
-
It has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.
-
Tulsi enhances the body's natural defenses and shortens illness duration.
-
How to use: Fresh leaves chewed daily, Tulsi tea, or tincture during cold & flu season.
4. For Digestion
-
Stimulates digestive fire, reduces bloating, and eases gas and cramping.
-
Tulsi also helps balance gut flora.
-
How to use: Take Tulsi tea after meals or add fresh leaves to food.
5. For Blood Sugar & Heart Health
-
Helps regulate blood sugar levels and supports insulin sensitivity.
-
Tulsi strengthens the heart and can reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure.
-
How to use: Drink Tulsi tea or take tincture daily as a long-term tonic.
6. For Skin & Wounds
-
Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for acne, rashes, insect bites, and small wounds.
-
How to use: Make a Tulsi-infused oil or poultice and apply directly to the skin.
7. For Spiritual & Emotional Cleansing
-
Tulsi is considered sacred and uplifting to the spirit. It clears negative energy and enhances clarity.
-
How to use: Keep a Tulsi plant in the home, burn dried Tulsi as incense, or add leaves to a cleansing bath.
Typical Dosages
-
Tea: 1 tsp dried Tulsi (or a few fresh leaves) per cup of water, 2–3x daily.
-
Tincture: 30–60 drops in water, 2–3x daily.
-
Capsules: Follow manufacturer’s directions (usually 400–600 mg, 2–3x daily).
⚠️ Precautions: Tulsi is generally safe but can slightly thin the blood and lower blood sugar, so use with caution if on blood-thinning or diabetic medications. Avoid in large medicinal doses during pregnancy unless guided by a professional.
